A collected glossary of terms and acronyms from the text roleplay community, the internet and IRC, and #BlkDragon*Inn specifically.
- AC – Aerial Corps: The flighted defenders of Drache.
- AFK – Away From Keyboard. Internet slang, indicating that a person was not currently at the computer.
- Arangire – Arangothek for ‘Count’: This genderless title is given to landed nobles that oversee larger areas of land under the jurisdiction of their Sithire of their province.
- Arangothek – The conlang (constructed language) of Arangoth. A 1500+ word language written exclusively for BDI several years ago by an old op/lore master. Several words are used as common place in RP. See also: floxod, sithire, sithrangel, tespin, vorfon. More on Arangothek can be found on our wiki.
- Attention whoring – The behavior of someone seeking attention regularly and often by behaving dramatically, either in the IC or the OOC channels. A person who makes a habit of doing this is an attention whore.
- BDI – BlkDragon Inn. Refers to the main channel, #BlkDragon*Inn. Also refers to the community as a whole.
- Bubble play – The act of only acknowledging the RP of a small group of people in your immediate area, ignoring the greater events around you. Or just ignoring other people outside of your conversation. Also known as cubicle play.
- CG – Civic Guard: The PC members of the Civic Guard of Drache.
- Coloring – The act of using colors in the IC channels to distinguish between action, dialogue or thoughts.
- Cubicle play – See also: bubble play.
- Cybering – The act of cyber sex, usually distinguished from ERP by merit of it being OOC.
- ERP – Erotic Roleplay: Roleplay that includes sex or sexual elements, like IC cyber sex. It is not allowed within the main BDI channels.
- Floxod – Arangothek for ‘Baron’: This genderless title is given to any landed noble. Floxod are beholden to the Sithire of their province.
- FFRP – Free Form Role Play: Few rules or guidelines, and a loose setting. While BDI commits itself to many of the ideals of FFRP, it’s probably closer to semi-FFRP, with its developed, canon setting.
- FTB – Fade to Black: This term is generally used when players agree to end the scene without continuing to play, but assumes that the characters continue in their romance, daily life, etc.
- GH – Guard House: This usually refers to the Main Guard House, but can mean the Wharf Garrison of the Civic Guard.
- GM – Game Master: Typically, this refers to the operators in the broad sense, but can also refer to an active player Game Master hosting an event.
- GMNPC – Game Master Non-Player Character: Characters that are controlled by the GM, or op controlled NPCs, such as the Captain of the Civic Guard or the Lord Admiral.
- God moding – The act of being virtually untouchable and indestructable both in combat, as well as avoiding any negative consequences or situations resulting from one’s own actions. Controlling another character’s actions or reactions to your own character is also considered god moding.
- God PC – God Player Character: An extremely overpowered player character that is considered god-level, or an actual god as a PC.
- Handwaving – Assuming the agreed upon actions and events without actually playing them out. Such as, obtaining citizenship for non-undead/evil/predatory races, or seeking out a business license, or guild membership, etc.
- HOH – House of Healing: An IC hospital of sorts, staffed by PCs and NPCs. Emergency treatment is free, with non-magical healing offered at generally low cost. Magical healing for non-emergency situations, such as limb regeneration or cosmetic treatment, such as scar removal is offered as a steep price increase. The House of Healing is a charitable, non-profit organization.
- IC – In Character. The actions and setting of the player created world of Veth. Anything that occurs in the op observed channels of #BlkDragon*Inn, #BDI*Outside, #BDI*Quests and #BDI*Arena is considered In Character canon.
- In the vapor – Actions that are assumed to happen without being played, such as the day to day actions of employment, business management and book keeping, etc.
- Long posting – A style of RP that is characterized by its 4+ paragraph long single post.
- Lurinthoon – A gold coin in the Arangothian currency, worth one hundred rixtles (silver pieces), and one thousand quaspins (copper pieces). Also known as a dragon. See also: Arangothian Currency on the wiki.
- Metagaming – The act of of using OOC knowledge that the given PC shouldn’t have IC.
- Mod – Short for “moderator”, this refers to the staff of BDI.
- Mun – Short for “mundane”, this refers to the real life players.
- NPC – Non-Player Character: A character that is not controlled by a player that is assumed to be behaving in a normal way. Dulcina the bartender is an example of an NPC.
- Off screen – Actions and events that occurred either in a private channel, or like in the vapor, were assumed to have happened without being played out.
- On screen – Actions and events that occur in the main channels and were observable by all players.
- OOC – Out of Character: Anything that is said or done in the real world. Can also refer to the OOC channel, #BDI*OOC.
- OP – Over Powered: Gamer slang.
- Op – Short for “operator”. IRC terminology for the admins and moderators of the channels. The staff of BDI.
- PA – Port Authority: The IC institution that monitors the active port of Drache, collecting tolls, taxes and fees from incoming and docked ships.
- PBP – Play By Post: A roleplay that is characterized by its slow post turn around time. Replies can be made from anywhere to an hour to a day or two, depending on the players. Forums style RP.
- PC – Player Character: A character that is controlled by a player.
- Post – A player’s text describing a character’s action and speech, can be of varying lengths.
- Potato-heading – The act of adding items, characteristics or skills to a character after creation that do not have IC explanations or really fit or suit the character. Like putting Mr. Potato Head’s ear in his eye hole, etc. The end result being that your character looks pretty ridiculous with all this extra stuff tacked on.
- Purple snark – Comments made in the narrative of a post (usually purple/magenta colored by typical RP coloring for actions) that cannot be responded to by another player, disparaging a character. Usually takes the forms of thoughts or assumptions made by the player in question, and characterized by the fact that another player has no way to respond to them, other than to make their own negative remarks in narrative. This behavior is discouraged in BDI.
- Quaspin – A copper coin in Arangothian currency. One hundred quaspin are equal to one rixtle (silver coins) or crown. One thousand quaspin are equal to one lurinthoon (gold coin). Quaspins are the lowest form of Arangothian currency. See also: Arangothian Currency on the wiki.
- Rixtle – A silver coin in Arangothian currency, also called a crown for the crown imprint on it. Most prices are calculated in crown. Worth one hundred quaspins (copper coins). One hundred rixtles are worth one lurinthoon (gold coin). See also: Arangothian Currency on the wiki.
- RLD – Red Lantern District: The district adjacent to the Wharf District and the Back Alley, so named for the numerous brothels that operate in the area.
- RM – Rumor Mill: The IC newspaper covering the latest player and GM created events. Updated about once a month and usually added to the BDI channels’ topics.
- RP – Roleplay: The act of creating characters and dictating their actions and speech. Basically, what we do in BDI is pretend to be elves and wizards.
- Session RP: A roleplay that is characterized by quick responses without a lot of down time or waiting. Chat style RP.
- Sithrangel – Arangothek for ‘duchy’: This word is used to describe a Sithire’s territory or province. BDI is set in the sithrangel of Transdariania.
- Sithire – Arangothek for ‘Duke’: This word refers to the head of state of a sithrangel, the duke of the province. The Sithire of Transdariania is Isabelle Auxerre.
- SL – Storyline: The sequence of events that players either create or participate in. There are two types of SLs, those that are generated by the players through natural RP, or those that are hosted by a GM that guide players through various key events.
- Tespin: Arangothek for ‘lady’: A form of polite address, this word is often used in the place of ‘Miss’, ‘Mistress’, and ‘Missus’, despite its original meaning.
- Timelocked – A scene of RP that is happening at another time than what time it is currently IC. IE: playing a scene set during the afternoon, even though the IC clock is currently at morning or evening. This can occur in larger time differences, such as a week before or after the current time.
- TL;DR – Too Long; Didn’t Read: Internet slang, used in RP to indicate that a post was too long and therefore wasn’t read.
- Vorfon: Arangothek for ‘lord’: A form of polite address, this word, like ‘tespin’ is often used in the place of ‘Mister’ or ‘Master’, despite its original meaning.
