Emil is one of the Southlands' lesser powers, with a history of strife and subjugation by various Southlander realms interspersed with periods of independence. Throughout its history, Emil has been bent on retaking the coastal city of Garusk, often with disastrous consequences.

Emil owes much of its culture to Elluria and Tollor but prefers to stand apart. With its mountainous terrain, Emil focused less on agriculture like its neighbors and more on industry and metallurgy, becoming a valuable resource base for the other Southlander powers. Like its neighbors, Emil is currently ruled as a protectorate of the Alesian Imperium.

The Harons are first the recorded people to live in the area that is now modern day Emil. They were also the first group to master the production of iron, and conquered the neighboring Dolluthian kingdoms in 1553 BT (1023 BG in Ellurian reckoning). The Haron Empire lasted only until 1540 BT (1010 BG), and it crumbled into several small kingdoms with a variety of Dolluthian influence. The Dolluthians managed to rebel against the Harons and destroy them after a very bloody war in 1512 BT (982 BG).

The Emilians were subjugated with the other peoples of the Southlands in the Aslarian conquest of 755 BT (225 BG), and remained under Aslarian rule until Kel Ellure led the rebellion that drove the Aslarians out of Tollor. The Emilians joined in expelling the Aslarians from their lands, though they did not join Kel Ellure's forces, nor did they swear fealty to her afterwards like the Tollorians and Allarians (later the Ellurians) did. King Arnoch of the Emilians tested Kel Ellure's mettle in the year 143 BT (387 ER) by asserting a claim over Garusk, but the Tollorian Queen's strong response to the challenge forced Arnoch to back down and the situation passed without further conflict. Arnoch found Kel Ellure's successor Jeon much less capable, however, and souring diplomatic relations led to the Three Years War from 126 BT (404 ER) to 123 BT (407 ER). Tollor was forced to surrender after many costly battles, and Emil took control of the city of Garusk.

The Emilians saw an opportunity to weaken the Tollorians when the boy King Regari died under suspicious circumstances and the Tollorian Vilgren family and Ellurian Sor family battled for the crown. King Jodash II backed the Ellurians, and allied with them in a bloody war that lasted from 86 (616 ER) until 91 (621 ER). In the end, the House of Vilgren triumphed, and the Tollorians reclaimed Garusk. His successor Jodash III decided to capitalize on the Tollorians' conflict with the J'Lontzek giants and attempt to retake Garusk in 115 (645 ER). This resulted in another bloody conflict called the Rat War, which eventually ended with an Emilian surrender in 116 (646 ER). The House of Eber in Marland rebelled against the ruling Elzanth dynasty following this defeat, and though Jodash III fell in battle with the rebels, they were unable to take Arausch. As a result, Emil was divided into Eastern and Western halves with rival monarchs claiming to be the legitimate King of all of Emil for the next century and a half. This situation persisted until King Throllo of the Elzanth dynasty died without a male heir in the year 223 (773 ER). The King's brother Ulyss was so unpopular with the aristocracy of Arausch that they instead proposed a dynastic marriage between Throllo's daughter, Princess Alani and King Lairson of Marland.

The Emilians came to see the exceptionally long rule of Queen Talya as a sign of the weakness of the Tollorian people, and they attacked the city of Garusk in the year 270 (800 ER). They were repelled by the Tollorians with the unexpected aid of the Tyranori, who expelled the Emilians from Garusk then descended upon Emil and seized the city of Locand in a brief three month conflict known as the Penede War. Locand remained a Tollorian possession until the year 466 (996 ER), when the Emilians retook the city during the War of the Hordes, but were held from seizing any further Ellurian territory from Tollor.

In Last Seed of 467 (997 ER) King Eldrich of Emil died, leaving his lands to his only child, the fourteen-year-old Laravel of Marland. Laravel wed Eldryn I of Tollor to join the Tollorian and Emilian kingdoms for the first time ever. The new Pan-Ellurian kingdom was known simply as Elluria. Emil bore the brunt of the war with Tyranor in the years 467-468 (997-998 ER). A powerful Tyranori force in the east swept into Emil, taking the cities of Arausch, Locand, and Marland within a matter of days. The Emilian army scattered and retreated to Lachstan. King Eldryn dispatched troops under Sir Roger Dulrin to Locand to begin the grim task of taking back Emil. Sir Charles Ruflin took command of a second force to relieve Lachstan, and then marched toward Arausch with a mix of Ellurian and Emilian forces. With victories at Arausch and Pine Marsh, the Ellurians were able to descend on the remaining Tyranori position at Marland. Redsword, outnumbered three to one, retreated back to Tyranor, where his forces were pinned against Akulek Ridge by a combined Ellurian-Teldanari force.

When Queen Laravel died of illness in 469 (999 ER), the High Council of Emil ordered the Ellurian banners taken down and elected the deceased Queen's kinsman, Prince Dankin of the House of Eber, as King of Emil. Prince Dankin sent a chest of gold to Aslar as tribute and concluded a separate peace with the Aslarians.

Notable Historical Figures

King Elzanth: First King of Emil. Emilians recount the glorious battle in which he drove the Aslarians out of Emil. Ellurians claim that he ambushed an Aslarian column on the march and cut them to pieces before they could form proper battle lines.

Arnoch the Great: Second King of Emil and Conqueror of Garusk. The priesthood of Lach in Lachstan presented him with a golden crown after the Three Years' War as a sign of the war god's favor. The Sacred Crown of Arnoch is still used to this day in the coronation of a new Emilian monarch.

Lairson of Marland: King of the eastern court of the House of Eber in Marland, he became the king of a re-united Emil with a dynastic marriage to Alani of Arausch after the death of King Throllo.

Geographical Features

Emil is located on the Southland Peninsula

Emil is a mountainous region on the southeastern end of the Southland Peninsula that is known for its mines of iron and precious metals. Locand is located in the northwest near the border with Elluria, and is is the principal point of overland trade between Emil and the rest of the Southland nations. Marland and Lachstan are port cities along the coast, and many of their people are engaged in fishing, shipbuilding, or maritime trade. Arausch is located in the country's central plains and is the traditional capital, but the city suffered much during the Tyranori war and was badly damaged by its conquest and liberation. The capital was moved to Lachstan in 468 (998 ER) following the war.

Government and Politics

Emil has a monarchial form of government, ruled by a King aided by a High Council.

Notable Government Officials

King Dankin I: The current monarch. Dankin was elected by the Emilian High Council following Queen Laravel's death in 469 (999 ER).

Anture Feios of Marland: Speaker of the Emilian High Council and the King's closest advisor and chief minister.

The people of Emil worship the gods of the Ellurian Pantheon. Lach, the god of mountains as well as the Ellurian war god is venerated more in Emil than in most of the other Southland nations. Lach is the patron of the city of Lachstan, where there are major temples devoted to his worship.

Society and Peoples

The people of Emil speak Emilian, a language related to Ellurian. One famous Aslarian scholar once wrote that the Ellurian and Emilian tongues remain similar only so that they might quarrel with one another.
