Biography

Before Drache

The origins of ‘Nicholas Baroque’ are hard to pin down due to the circumstances of his birth. According to his word, he was born in the back of a cart mid voyage somewhere on the roads of Arangoth, his parents supposedly being travelling merchants like he himself used to be. From there, mentions of the Baroque family pop up here and there across the map. Some use the phrase ‘travelling merchant’ lightly. This is not the case with the Baroque family, as mentions of them appear all the way from Northern Veth to Mwayambi. Whether these are the same Baroques Nicholas was born to, or other family relations, is unknown. They never remain in towns long enough for extensive paperwork to be established.

Due to having grown up in caravans and on the road, not much is known of his childhood either. It can be fairly assumed that he grew up amongst merchants and wanderers, learning their ways in the untamed frontiers of nature.

It is known that Nicholas split off from his parents at some point to strike out on his own as a merchant, likely a family tradition of sorts. Mentions of Nicholas Baroque occur everywhere from that point. However, there seems to be a certain focus on Najjir, as a bounty for a ‘Nicholas Baroque’ with a poster matching his description was put out for the disruption of slave caravans. Other than that, mentions of the merchant within Southern Veth are relatively mundane. Typical sales and deals you’d expect from a travelling merchant, though people always seemed to comment on his honesty. Not significant in it’s own right, but not what most expect from a travelling merchant.

Drache

Nicholas Baroque arrived in Drache on a late night in the colder winter months, according to eyewitnesses there that were present for the event that followed. Apparently he and some sort of sentient slime had an altercation with a 'Justin Scorch’. While it's normally frowned upon for one to end up in a fight with someone so much younger than themselves, it's been said that Justin Scorch was less than reputable within the city of Drache

He set up a stall in the merchant district the next day and began peddling his wares. He sold nothing significant, just typical odds and ends for adventurers and travelers. Though many commented on the wide varieties of jerky he had for sale, something which appealed to those going on long journeys. This was also the same night he met who would be his first love, and his first regret within the city of Drache, Maerwynn.

In what is definitely considered atypical behavior from a Baroque, Nicholas seemed to stick to the city of Drache instead of staying for a few days and then being gone with the wind. Instead of packing up, he kept expanding his stall and increasing his wares to make more sales. It didn't take long for him to be one of the more successful stalls in the merchant square. It didn't make the most money in comparison to others, but the frequency of traveling provisions being sold from his cart was getting high.

At some point, through unknown means, Nicholas got access to enough money to buy his own store. He did so, opening it on the merchant’s square with the title ‘Baroque’s General’. It was a successful store that provided for the mundane adventurer. While most stores tiered towards adventurers were high end and expensive, trying to make the most money off of the richer adventurers and legends that haunted about Drache, Baroque's General was tiered towards the lower end. Basic warriors and those just starting out in their careers. Mundane swords, scrolls, and various travel provisions are what the location dealt in.

Maerwynn

Nicholas and Maerwynn were known to be a couple a few months or so after they met, and they moved in together soon after the opening of his general store. Supposedly she was in a hurry to get out due to her family being of a broken sort. The relationship lasted for a good while, but not all good things last. At some point, Nicholas ended up in a fae market in which he traded a sum of treasure to free a few slaves. Maerwynn, for some reason enraged at Nicholas spending his money without her permission, got into a fight with him at the inn. Local gossip stated that they went their separate ways not long after.

The hunt for Shuunen

This is a foggy incident within the history of Nicholas Baroque. By this point, he had become decently acquainted with Drache and it’s quirks. He knew his way around, and was in the know when it came to all the local gossip and rumors thanks to his shop being in the center of it all. A prominent celebrity and known lich in the city at the time, Ravynetti Tivuard, enlisted his aid in finding an old foe back from the dead, Shuunen. Not much is known about how Nicholas contributed, and Shuunen’s fate is unknown.

Tlanextlil

This was when Nicholas got his son, and Baroque’s General got what many refer to as an adorable scaly mascot. Tlanextlil was quite the rare sight, a genuine couatl. Where the little creature came from is unknown. Nicholas, not knowing his true nature, purchased Tlanextlil from the provakh caravan that stopped in town. The couatl was in it’s infancy, and unable to speak yet. It wasn't long after that Tlanextlil finally learned to speak, and established a mental connection with Nicholas. Following this, Nicholas set up papers to make Tlanextlil an official citizen. He then immediately adopted the couatl into his own family.

Second Love

At some point within his days in Drache, Nicholas met Eve, daughter of a prominent mage by the name of Day. An oddly named family, to her certain, but Nicholas found himself charmed by the intelligence and bright disposition that the naga girl seemed to have. They got along quite well, and she served as a good influence for Tlanextlil, helping him get ahold of his inherent magic as he was rapidly growing up. While this relationship lasted longer than Maerwynn due to them both having more in common, they eventually ended up going their separate ways. No one particularly knows why, though some suspect it was because Eve wanted to stay home, and Nicholas’s wanderlust was once again creeping in.

The Mhernletta incident

Something dark overtook the port city of Mhernletta, adventurers were rallied to help retake the city from the legions of undead that now held dominion over it. Nicholas heeded the call, bringing his merchant wares for those there to buy at discounted prices, and to help feed the soldiers stationed at the camp, as the naturally grown food there had become inedible due to the sickness in the land. Nicholas played a minor part, but he was there, and it's said that he takes great pride in that.

Traveling Outward

The Mazewood incident got Nicholas’s need to see the world flowing once more. He wanted to go on more trips, seeing the world. It was within his family tradition, and he wanted Tlanextlil to experience the world as well. This was what he and Eve separated over. After all was said and done, he left trusted employees with his shop, and went off with his cart and Tlanextlil to explore once more. Currently, his whereabouts are unknown.

Personality

Nicholas has changed in the past 5 years. Once the ever friendly merchant with a pep in his step and a wide grin, he’s mellowed out over time. His experiences within Drache have both mellowed him out and worn him down. These days, he’s more cynical. The once wide smile has been replaced with a bored frown, that friendly gaze is now one of neutrality. He’s much more wary and less trusting than he used to be. Within, his former kindness is still there, and he wants the best for those around him. His son in particular. Making sure Tlanextlil has the best life possible. He’ll go to any lengths to make sure that’s the case.

Physical Description

Standing at an average height of 5’8, Nicholas Baroque isn’t a too imposing figure. His most identifiable features are those sharp bluish-green eyes, and that trademark bored frown he has when not engaged in conversation. Though, half the time he’s still got it during conversation as well depending on who he’s talking to. In terms of physique. He’s certainly well built, muscle earned from his recent travels and roughing it in nature once again on. His preferred hairstyle is slightly messy, and he’s almost always got a lightly trimmed beard growing, though he shaves it down to a five o'clock shadow on occasion. Despite being quite a paranoid person, he comes across as relaxed, very casual in his actions with an equally casual tone of voice when not panicked or in a rough situation. When talking about things he enjoys, one will occasionally get a smile out of him.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Abilities

Mundane Skills

  • Merchant: If there’s anything Nicholas knows about, it’s the market. What people want, what the current prices are, how to advertise and sell something. Merchanting is Nicholas’s greatest skill, and he uses it to make his fortune. Along with merchanting comes his knowledge of math, economics, literature, even some philosophy. Overall, he’s a very well educated individual.
  • Silver Tongue: Nicholas, with his looks and his way of speaking, is a very charming man. Not in a flirtatious or romantic way, however. He knows how to sell things and be persuasive, that is where his charm comes in. He can make the most minor details of an object seem significant, the biggest flaws with an item seem minor. Before one knows it, they might walk out of his shop with more than they intended
  • Marksman: This isn’t something he uses often, especially since he typically avoids combat and has others handle it for him if he can. Nicholas is a good marksman with a crossbow and wands, but that’s it.. Regular bows are not his forte. His experience is in crossbows, wands, and hand crossbows. Perhaps an arbalest too, but he doesn’t want to carry such a thing on his person.
  • Poker face: Nicholas isn’t overly emotive. He’s seen it all and not much surprises him. It takes a lot to make him reveal a secret if he’s got one. Most of the time, one won’t even know if he’s hiding something behind that neutral expression of his.
  • Cooking: He’s a good cook these days, he picks up the skill thanks to being an only parent. He makes a lot of eggs, since Tlanextlil loves them to death. Luckily he’s also got a frying pan that’s enchanted to always cook the perfect egg! He’s unsure why or how.

Magic Skills

None

Equipment

Weapons

  • Necrophidius Summoning Ring: A purchase from Ravynetti, Nicholas isn’t exactly open about owning this item due to the general consensus on necromancy that the world has. When activated, it summons a 5 foot long necrophidius to do Nicholas’s bidding.
  • Iron Cobra: Yet another purchase he made at the height of his wealth, this 12 foot long golem with a deadly bite guards his shop when he’s out, and his cart when he’s travelling. It's also able to take the form of a ring for easy transportation.
  • Various Wands: Nicholas holds a few wands in his coat and in his bag of holding. Due to not being a mage, he has to use spells enchanted onto the wands instead of actually controlling what spells to use. The spells can vary, but none of them are ever terribly destructive. Just basics to scare off foes and provide self defense.
  • Crossbow: Just a simple crossbow with fine carvings in the wood and enhanced slightly by magic so that it is not hurt by the volatile nature of some of the bolts that are loaded into it.
  • Magic Arrow: A simple bolt of magic energy
  • Magic Shield: A simple general purpose dome of protection that generates in front of the user when activated
  • Fireball: Launches a ball of fire at the enemy
  • Pulse: A nonlethal close range spell that sends out a forceful pulse meant to knock pursuers off their feet
  • Hunting Knife: Just a simple hunting knife for all purposes. Hunting, skinning, self defense, etc.

Armor

  • Leather armor set
  • Stoneskin potions: Nicholas keeps a few of these in his bag of holding at all time to make sure he stays protected should he end up in a situation in which he can’t dodge.
  • Fire Immunity Potions: Nicholas learned his lesson a long time ago. If Drache isn’t on fire, it’s probably about to be. He’s got at least five of these on his person at all times out of pure paranoia.

Tools

  • Large Satchel of Holding: One of his most expensive purchases to be sure, he uses this as the basis of both keeping his valuables, and making sure he always has a plan for self defense. He’s even hidden in it before to escape from brigands.

Goals

  • Raise Tlanextlil to be the best he can be
  • Achieve merchant prince status and become a major player in global trade
  • Sell. Jerky.
