Character Background
Born and raised on the isolated island nation of Azaan to a family lineage boasting a long line of artificers, engineers and military officers, rumoured to be descendants of a powerful bloodline that composed the magical empire that dominated the land in its past. With death and exile on the horizon they brokered a deal to work with the revolutionary forces to ensure their survival and prosperity, essentially selling out their previous comrades and becoming traitors in the process. They had no concerns over being treated as traitors, as any that would treat them as such didn't survive the revolution, they consider this maneuver well worth any short lived animosity it inspired. While wary of their intentions, they gradually won over the High Directorate with their efforts, managing to put themselves into a position to hold quite a high level of influence in political and military circles alike.
To say Weiss was born with a silver spoon in his mouth would be an understatement, he wanted for nothing in his youth, and even at a young age his high level of intelligence earned him praise as a genius and a prodigy, though it was also accompanied by an unnerving sensation, as even at that age it was clear to some that something wasn't quite right with the boy. He excelled in any fields of study he desired, though this was wholly directed by his obsessive nature when it came to learning, earning many accolades and merits from his peers in the process. By all accounts the boy had a promising career ahead of him, rarely was he anywhere but first place in his academic classes, and as he grew into adulthood this truth was self evident. That said, he showed little interest in attachments to others, and instead could more often than not found in the company of the machines for which he showed a vast level of interest in instead of his contemporaries. The few that knew him on a personal level were aware of, what were originally musings of a youth, eventually turned into a full blown obession with the creation not only of fully sentient machines, but his own desires to shed his physical body and become one with the machines he so admired.
Despite this, he graduated with honours from the most prestigious educational establishment at the time, earning himself a highly coveted position within one of the military research and development divisons, where by all accounts he benefitted and flourished amongst like minded individuals, even if he unnerved them with his obsessive nature to push the limits of knowledge and its application to projects over the course of many, many years. Little documentation exists concerning the nature of his "honourable" military discharge, but what is known is that almost over night, after almost an entire lifetime of exemplary service, he'd not only been blackballed from the military, but also managed to earn himself a "voluntary" exile from Azaan. Rumours and whispers around the matter seem to indicate Weiss was performing unethical and inhumane experiments, using prisoners, the poorest dregs of society, and even political dissidents. It's suggested that the political and military clout of his family is what kept him from the gallows, the fact that the facility housing the documents concerning these matters mysteriously and conveniently caught fire and burned to the ground shortly afterwards certainly earned no small amount of suspicion. Even with that being the case, those in power seemed willing to look the other way, which spurred rumours that the research Weiss had been undertaking wasn't entirely unsanctioned, and that he was essentially just playing the role of scapegoat to placate internal factions that frowned heavily upon the experiments due to their nature. The intention seems to have been to have him bear the burden of these wrongdoings and have him spend the few remaining years of what life he had left in exile to make way for the new generation that followed, leaving everyone with a clean conscience concerning what had transpired.
It's been over more than 200 years since Weiss left Azaan in exile, the fact that he's still alive and well, and not only hasn't seemed to age in the meantime, but actually appears far younger than he was previously, suggests that perhaps his obsessive ambition to become one with the machines he admires may no longer be a dream, but rather, his new reality.
Physical Description
While it's possible to easily mistake him as human, there are many red flags from his appearance that should give pause to such an assumption. Weiss barely stands six feet in height, his lean, gamine physique giving him a rather innocuous physical nature, leaning heavily towards the effeminate end of the spectrum, it's rather easy to mistake him as a flat chested female, which happens more often than he is comfortable with. His skin is an almost startling colour of white porcelain, which clashes heavily with hooded eyes the colour of vibrant lavender that almost seem to glow, mixed into which are specks of black and dark blue, completely lacking pupils all together. If he were to stand still and not blink for any extended periods of time he could easily be mistaken as a life-sized porcelain doll of impressive craftsmanship. His luxurious black hair is usually shorn very short along the sides and worked into an assortment of braiding styles atop. Small, glossy white horns protrude out of his head just behind his hairline, little more than inch long nubs the length and thickness of tip of a thumb to the first joint, terminating in a rounded point that stand out easily thanks to the dark colour of his hair, though they can just as easily be mistaken as hair accessories due to their diminutive size.
His preference for clothing almost entirely borders between utilitarian and militaristic, heavily favouring comfortable, practical clothing in lieu of stylistic and fanciful garments. He is almost always seen wearing gloves of various assortments, and seems rather protective of his hands in general, considering them the highest quality "tools" he has at his disposal, second only to his mind itself.
Talents, Skills, Quirks
His horns, along with his general odd appearance have occasionally been met with accusations that he is demon-kin, though ultimately these claims have been proven false by all methods used to attempt to discern this detail. He refuses to speak of his species and nature, despite his willingness to discuss almost any topic at great length. He's open about where he's been, to an extent, but from where he originally hails from, again, is also a topic that is not open for discussion.
Weiss possesses little to no physical combat skills, and while extremely knowledgable in an extensive variety of magical talents, none of these are of a directly offensive nature, he considers these techniques to be "incompatible" and "inefficient" in regards to his ability to wield magic.
- Artificer - As one of his main fields of interest, the invention and application of new technology is at the forefront of his research. He is highly skilled in the fabrication and application of both physical and magical materials towards this end.
- Alchemist - He possesses an in-depth understanding of the composition and properties of substances and various elementary and magical forms of matter.
- Machinist - An undying passion concerning the creation and application of both simple and complex machinery.
- Scribe - Well learned in the art of calligraphy and scripture of various languages, upon having spent the majority of his years alive utilizing parchment and ink in the pursuit of knowledge, it's an essential and well practiced skill.
- Mathematician - Mathematical Savant, whether this is a natural inclination or learned skill is unknown, considers this question moot since it's a 'basic' skill everyone should know.
- Golem-Meister - A pursuit bordering on fanaticism concerning the creation of golems, both semi-autonomous and autonomous. The designs of these tend to lean towards the mechanical nature with magical supplementation for their operations, often based on but not limited to contemporary species and creatures.
- Puppet Magic -His magical prowess is best exemplified by his ability to animate and control the movements of inanimate objects. The wavelengths this power operates on borders on magical/psionic, the line being so blurred that it's neither one or the other, and yet both at the same time. It fluctuates as necessary to sustain its operation in the presence of anti-magic and anti-psionic shielding, both are required to render this power completely inoperable. This power does not affect organic or sentient life, unless it has been outfitted with an artificial interface designed to allow it.
- Visual Integrity - The absence of light does affect his ability to see, retaining perfect acuity even in complete darkness, natural or magically induced. No length of time is necessary for him to adjust his vision in abrupt changes of lighting. Barring obstructions to the observer, his eyes can be seen clearly at vast distances away. He does not have superior visual range over the average human, however, his ability to grasp fine detail at extremely close ranges (within 12 inches) is vastly superior.
- Body Modifications - The extent of his bodily modifications is not widely known, nor something he speaks freely about. His horns, whether original to his form or not, have been modified to further supplement his ability to perform his puppet magic, which amplify the magical/psionic wavelengths used in its control, allowing him precise manipulation of it at extended ranges and two-way communication of information carried on these wavelengths.
- Iron Ego - Attempts to dominate or alter his actions and thoughts through both magical and psionic means are almost entirely futile due to his overwhelmingly strong sense of self. Aspects of his personality that would be vulnerable to suggestions are, fundamentally, rendered pointless since he will voluntarily act out on these desires without the need of any outside influence.
- Knowledge Zealot - The title of "Rapacious Scholar" is not a compliment, but is still extremely accurate. He's more than willing to let trivial things like ethics and morality take a backseat to furthering his understanding when the subject catches his interest, and will pursue it with a barely restrained religious fervor to learn as much as he can.
- Frail Constitution - While not sickly or suffering from ill health, Weiss' physical attributes are fairly well below an average human counterpart.
- Reliable Coward - Weiss will avoid physical and magical confrontations at any given chance, and will not voluntarily involve himself in a fight unless the odds are extremely favourable to him.
- Effeminate Appearance - No, really, he's actually male. Honest. Yes, yes, he's well aware of what he looks like, but remains resolute in the fact that he does indeed have gentlemanly bits. He apologizes in advance if you have a thing for flat chested girls.
- Sociopath - He tends to forget that most do not share his 'fervor' for the pursuit of knowledge, or that they place certain things in higher priority than he does, which, if you ask him, clearly they're the ones that are in the wrong. While Weiss does not derive pleasure from acts most would consider 'cruel' (which seperates him from the psychopaths), he is unfazed by most of the basic doctrines concerning the sanctity of life, there's no question in his mind that the ends justify the means. If at all possible he will operate within the laws of the land, while he may not necessarily agree, he understands the difference between 'right and wrong' where it concerns society and criminal activity.
Other Information
Being well traveled, Weiss is rarely in any place for extended periods of time, though the occasional rumour may come about that this need to egress was necessary due to his inability to properly judge the impacts of his research, often due to moral and ethical concerns exhibited by others around him. He considers them 'narrow-minded' for their lack of understanding that the advancement and progress of knowledge is far more valuable than trivial emotions and principles. He considers religion and politics to be frivolous pursuits and those involved with either "self important zealots", which is ironic considering how closely it parallels his own zealotry concerning knowledge. He cares little for titles, status, power and money, if they do not directly support his ability to further his research they are worthless, but he isn't above taking advantage of any of them if they coincide with his pursuits and avail him of avenues that benefit his intentions.
