This name was derived from the rats defense of 'play dead'. Often a house wife or child will be caught by seeing this seemingly lifeless animal suddenly get up and scurry away. This might seem as an odd defense but it seems to work. The rat is ruddy brown in shade with flecks of black for camouflage against raptors and other predators. It can be as long as 5 inches with tail. They are not known for climbing as much as burrowing and swimming. Habitat is various. As many as 10 young born blind. Adult in two months.
