Zane
Biography
Not much is known of Zane’s past. Supposedly he's from a family of wealthy means that lived in a manor somewhere out in the Arangoth countryside. Though if one were to go to it’s location, there would only be ash and ruined trees. However, it can be judged from his tastes in alcohol, clothes, and various other things, that his upbringing was similar to that of nobility, with a childhood befitting of such a life situation. However, his tastes are the only evidence of him being born from a wealthy family. The earliest truly early history of Zane on record is an incident report from Drache’s firefighter mage coalition. They had arrived on the scene just in time to see a young boy, looking to be around the age of 17, charging into the flames in order to save people trapped inside. Before then, he had been seen wandering about the city as a simple street rat, begging for coin and drinking what booze he could get his hands on. Most had already written him off as gutter trash.
Though, what the fire coalition got to witness was something else. They had to save him from the fire as well, as he wasn't trained to handle such a situation. However, they were moved by the bravery it took for him to run into the flames in such a way when it seemed help wasn't going to arrive in time. It took a special sort of soul to selflessly charge into fire in such a way. In Zane, they saw potential hidden under all the drinking and wallowing.
Afterwards, supposedly, one of the elder firefighters, a man by the name of Arowen, took an interest in him. He began actively providing the education Zane needed to get work, provided that work was as a firefighter. The studies he ended up taking were centered around fire magic, water magic, and it's various uses.
Judging by reports from his teachers, Zane was not an easy student to teach. He had difficulties with authority and a sarcastic disposition. However, he proved to have a talent for his studies. It was easy to tell he put in effort despite his abrasive demeanor. Outside of school work, he still drank and partied quite often. However, he did stop begging since he had been given a place to stay by Arowen. According to the other firefighters, Arowen was the only person Zane seemed to trust and respect.
As the years went by, Zane’s training continued, both physical and magical. Eventually, he was allowed to join in on a fire rescue for the first time. There was a certain unexplainable determination within him according to those who watched him work. All 10 people got out alive, Zane saved 6 of them. It was a good start to his career as a firefighter.
Another few years went by of Zane learning on the job, learning how to both rescue people from their demise and using various magics to suppress fires so he could fill both roles, be it working outside with water and ice to quell the flames, or using magic to remove flames and obstacles when within the building.
It was within this few years that Arowen’s age caught up with him. He had to sit out firefights more often, Zane taking his place on the squad more and more frequently. Not much longer after that. Arowen faded away surrounded by Zane and other various loved one within his home on the 31rst of Tertuakerinat, 491. In his death he left Zane his worldly possessions, as if Zayne were his own child, since he had no children of his own.
Personality
Zane is a man wracked by loss. The last of his line in a wealthy family now gone, he walks this world with a cynical gaze. Outwardly, he comes across as a silly drunk that’s hard to take seriously due to how often he’s blackout drunk, either getting into a barfight, doing silly dances on the tables, or overall making a fool of himself. When it comes to his work however, drunk or not, he’s serious as the grave.
Though he’d never admit it, for all his slacking off and goofing around, he holds the utmost determination to make sure he’s the best firefighter he can be. He wants to make sure that no one else ever suffers the loss he felt. No fire will stop him from preventing that, no matter how hot.
Physical Description
Zane is a rugged looking man, often seen with his black hair styled in a trimmed beard and slicked back hair. He’s got pale skin that’s rough looking due to his constant proximity with fire and smoke, with a few scars here and there from his work. The most notable one being the scar that drags down the front of his face, over his left eye and lips. This scar was the worst injury he’s received in the line of duty thus far. The sharp end of a falling beam grazed his face. Were it any closer, he would have died.
He’s got a wide shoulder muscular form, earned through the lifting of heavy objects and either shoulder bashing or kicking in doors. He makes sure to have exercising sessions every day to make sure he’s in peak shape to do his job. Due to his job, his body is often covered by bruises and burns.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Abilities
Mundane Skills
- Competent fighter: Zane been in a few bar brawls in his lifetime. Not to mention the firefighters have had to fight the occasional arsonist. Overall, he’s proficient enough to hold himself in a fight, mostly using his brute strength to hit the enemy hard and fast, be it with his fists or a weapon.
- Parkour: Sometimes when you get into the building, stairs are no longer an option. Zane has been trained in the art of climbing various structures, using either tools or his bare hands.
Magic Skills
- Pyromancy: Trained in the arts of pyromancy, Zane can summon fire if it’s required for some reason. However, most of his pyromancy is centered around manipulating already existing flames to either absorb them or direct them elsewhere so they are no longer an obstacle. Along with this are fire immunity magics for the more extreme fires. It’s more of a defensive skillset than an attack skillset
- Aeromancy: Zane’s training in aeromancy is a unique version of it. Typically, air is discouraged when in a fire, since it feeds the flames. However, a common tactic to quickly remove a fire covered obstacle is the use of aeromancy to remove all the air from the location of said object, therefore snuffing out the flames. This is what Zayne’s aeromancy training is mainly focused on.
- Hydromancy: While he can conjure water, it wastes precious energy. Most of Zane’s hydromancy abilities are centered around the manipulation of already existing water. This is typically for the purpose of pulling water from the large water buckets the fire coalition brings to the scene to throw onto the flames. This is typically used when Zayne’s job for the day is standing outside and helping douse the fires, or there's too much fire and he needs to remove flames from one of the entrances.
- Telekinesis magic: Zane’s knowledge in this is very basic, only touched upon for fire coalition utility. That is, the only thing he can do with telekinesis is send out a telekinetic blast of varying levels of force. This is typically used to break down doors and remove obstacles that are hard to move by hand.
Equipment
Weapons
- Fireman’s Axe: Used for chopping through wood to get to an objective. While not intended as a weapon, this will properly serve as one just the same, due to it being a two handed axe, always sharpened for chopping.
- Shortsword: A simple blade that Zane carries on his person daily for self defense. A solid, if simple, weapon.
Armor
- Heavy Leather: Heavy coats and leather attire meant to reduce burning and flammability when working. While the leather is flammable, it's thick enough that Zane can magically put out the fire before it burns through to his skin. The leather is heavy enough to serve as decent armor as well.
Tools
- Air Necklace: The most important piece of gear that's given by the fire coalition, this necklace produces an air bubble so that firefighters can properly work without running out of oxygen, even when standing in smoke.
- Grapple Hook: A simple rope with a four pronged hook at the end of it. This is often used when scaling a structure is needed. Typically when the stairs inside a multistory building have fallen apart or become unusable.
- Climbing Picks: Typically used for mountain climbing, these serve another purpose for Zane. Sometimes the structures aren't stable enough to support his weight on a grapple hook, so he’ll use these to climb up walls and find another way up.
Goals
- The mentor, and the closest thing he's had to family since the death of his own, has just died. He wants to do his damndest to make Arowen’s belief in him worth it by being the best firefighter he can.
- To perhaps make enough money to have the wealth he lost along with his family all those years ago.
- He wants to further his knowledge of magic, both to be a better firefighter and for the pursuit of knowledge in general
- Have damn good time, be it through drunken foolery or otherwise.
