Regency Council Biography
Of Noble Arangothian birth to a family whose holdings were largely rural in the area bordering the Elgar forest, Harlst spent an early life as befitted a moderately wealthy family. However, economic hardship befell the family and it was in this economic hardship that they fell to a shoe-string budget to pay taxes and keep the lands in working order. It was into this situation that Harlst Mhern reached his manhood. It was not too long before the impulses of a young man and even the encouragements of his parents brought him to take up overseas voyages to Ethcabar-Antara and beyond, as far as Selrose Bay, Dulsi and the Isle of Myst, to represent his family in trade concerns to try and bring some money. Mostly these trades involved lumber to the ports that was logged from the Elgar forest.
It was three years after his eighteenth that his ship was set upon by the Korthai and much of the crew was killed. Those survivors, himself included, were taken captive. Contrary to the popular notion that the Korthai ate the flesh of their captives, drank their blood and sacrificed their hearts to the demons that gave them their skills, Harlst and the other crewmen were adopted into Korthai society. It was for many years that Harlst was among the Korthai, and eventually rose to the rank sufficient to captain one of their warships. He made for himself a rather well-known and respected name amongst the Korthai when news had come to him of his parents and family having passed on for many reasons. He had also learned that he was the last heir surviving. When he and several other Korthai captains began to discuss the ramifications of such an inheritance, it became apparent that the Mhern family lands were quite suitable for the construction of a Home Port near the booming new port city of Drache, and a place where many goods could be shipped past customs in Drache.
The town of Mhernettla was constructed by several Korthai and initially managed in Harlst's name before Harlst retired into the same town and took up the responsibilities of acting as an intermediary for Mhernettla and the rest of Arangoth. By then he was known as Harlst Mhern-Lathvek, having taken the family name of his adoptive family among the Korthai. It was in Mhernettla that he and many adopted Arangothian Korthai have retired to. As a Korthai, he commands great respect for building a Home Port and for his prowess as a captain. Among the Arangothians, he is respected for able administration of his lands as well as the wealth that he has been able to put into the lands around Mhernettla. His reputation amongst some Arangothians is only marred by his adoption by the Korthai and his acceptance of a status beyond the need to do so.
